It’s Springtime! Time to pull the reins on the green grass…
The snow has melted, the weather is warming up, and the grass is greener. It may seem that the hardest season has come to pass and life is good; however, there are a number of conditions that your horse may be at the highest risk for this time of year. Founder (laminitis), insect hypersensitivity, diseases associated with insect vectors, and certain types of colic are much more prevalent this time of year than any other. While we vaccinate for many of the terrible diseases that are transmitted by insects (i.e. WNV, EEE, WEE, and PHF), we aren’t as quick to be concerned about the green grass in the pasture. We are usually glad to see green instead of white.
