Goals:

  • To foster confidence, independent thinking, and problem-solving strategies while providing a broad exposure to general equine veterinary medicine.
  • To ensure a strong foundation of skills, as well as encourage development of further skillset in area(s) of interest.
  • To provide a safe and comfortable environment for sharing thoughts and ideas.
  • To build inter-personal communication skills and develop techniques for handling high-stress situations.

Internship Structure:

  • Rotate daily ride-alongs between staff veterinarians, Dr. Brian and Dr. Jess, on a monthly basis.
    • Allows for consistency in training, development of skillset, case follow-up
  • Over the course of the year, the intern may be scheduled for select routine appointments to build confidence and independence.
  • 5-day workweek
  • After-hours emergencies:
    • Travel to emergencies with on-call DVM, or meet DVM at emergency.
      • 2 nights/week
      • Every other weekend
    • Once confidence in triaging emergencies is established, intern would begin to see emergencies independently, with a back-up doctor pre-established for check-in prior to seeing the ER, and prior to leaving the ER.
      • 1-2 nights/week
      • Every 3rd weekend
  • Foaling duty:
    • KVA offers seasonal broodmare care, foaling, and breeding services. Foaling duty is separate from ER duty.
    • All foalings are attended by a veterinarian and an assistant.
      • The intern would initially enter into the foaling duty rotation as an assistant. Comfort and seasonal experience will dictate the opportunity to act as primary veterinarian, with an assistant. A backup veterinarian is available at all times.
    • 1-2 nights/week
    • Every 3rd weekend
  • In-house responsibilities:
    • Assist in oversight of and completion of procedures and treatments on the daily in-house schedule. Goals: Establish comfort and confidence in the understanding of and performing the basics of breeding management, broodmare and foal care.
    • Assist in case management and care of hospitalized patients, and develop comfort in client communication related to patient care.
  • Doctor Rounds
    • Case-specific discussions, journal article discussions, etc will take place while in the truck with staff veterinarian pertaining and relevant to active cases, while on monthly rotation.
    • After the monthly rotations are complete, Doctor Rounds will be on a weekly rotating basis between the doctors.

  • Total value of benefits package: ~$27,000

Salary: $30,000 with $5,000 internship completion bonus at culmination of internship

Salary + Benefits = Total Package Value $62,000

Housing not provided. We would be happy to assist you in finding housing accommodations. We prefer doctors and staff to live within a 15 min radius of our facility, for purposes of arriving to in-house foalings within 20 min critical window of onset of stage 2 labor. A $1,000/month housing stipend is available.

Veterinary licensure in Pennsylvania required.
